Final Project

For my final project of my 9th grade Digital Art year :(, I decided to do another digital painting. As with my other painting, I took on the challenging task of painting a person, however, this time, in black and white. This brought new challenges to me because the colors are so similar and making sure they did not blend together was difficult. The background color was a challenge for me. It is not the same as in the photo because, as I mentioned, the color blended too much with the shirt.

In my original proposal, I thought I would add a creepy eye-drip effect on my painting, kind of like Alex’s (Bollywood’s Best Grumpy Cat) demon-like depiction of Julie. Yet, I wanted to keep this painting pure, and I didn’t like having a creepy effect on such a nice photo. if I did take that approach, however, I would have possibly made the drips be a different color (or an actual color/not black and white), to make them pop.

I’m glad I did another digital painting for my final project. With the limited time I had, as I worked on my Flash Animation project for what seemed like forever, I wanted to do something I knew how to do. I am also glad I took Digital Art. This was such a great class. Although MANY challenges were put upon me, I tried my best to fix them and became a more patient person, in my eyes. Thank you, Mrs. Oliveri for all your help throughout the year. I really appreciate it and can’t wait for another class with you!!

P.S. I will add the photo/final outcome later. It wouldn’t let me upload it…?

The Hot Air Balloon

Balloon

As I was painting this, my idea changed for how I wanted it to look. At first, I used the eye dropper tool to find the exact color for every part, but then as I was looking at it, I noticed that none of the colors were really going well together. To fix this, I started to follow a pattern with the colors so that all of the colors went together.

I have painted in real life in previous art classes and on pottery. I liked virtually painting a lot better than painting with real paint. It was easier to paint virtually, because you can zoom into the picture more than you can in real life. It’s also easier because the paint on the computer isn’t runny and messy. Virtually painting was a little harder in the sense that when you zoom in too far, you cant see the picture well.

My favorite part of this picture would have to be the bottom of the balloon leading down to the basket. This is my favorite part because it looks so realistic and neat.

If I could go back and change anything, I would change the background. I would maybe make the background a little more detailed. I wanted to show a few clouds in the background, but I couldn’t figure out how to make it look as realistic as it did in the original photo.

Digital Painting (Photoshop)

Image

This is a digital painting of Kieley (aka kmilliman16).

At first, for most of the areas, I colored in blocks of solid color, then added shading (darker and lighter colors in different opacities). But for the skin (and dont ask me why I did this because I don’t know) I just started out without the solid color and started at a low opacity.

My previous experience with painting with real paper and paint, although I have little, definitely helped me here, as did my experience with pencil and paper. It was easier to get the right colors, but I was frustrated that I couldn’t make the opacity just right in order to make the shading smoother.

My favorite part would have to be the eyes. I like how sharp the eyeliner is, and the light on her eyes make them pop. The shading on the eyelids was fun, too. But, if I could go back and change one thing, it would be the hair. That was probably the most difficult part.

(PS. The background is based on Tali’Zorah’s suit hood design (for those who play Mass Effect.))

WP #5 Digital Painting

Digital Painting Assignment

  1. Select a digital image (that you own the rights to or have taken)
  2. Open your image in Photoshop
  3. Create a new layer to start painting on
  4. Use the eyedropper to select colors
  5. Use the tablet and the paintbrush tool to paint the image

To turn in the piece submit a new post to wordpress and answer the following questions…

  1. How did the image evolve as you painted it?
  2. What experience do you have painting in real life (not virtually)? How did this compare to using paint and paint brushes? What was easier? What was harder?
  3. What is your favorite part? Why?
  4. What would you change if you could go back? Why?
